Jayma Meyer

Professor Jayma Meyer is a widely recognized expert in the field of sports law. She focuses on the power of sport to bring about social change through education, activism and litigation. Ms. Meyer, with a distinguished legal career at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, is immersed teaching sports law and public policy at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law and O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, serving on leading boards and councils in the sports arena, and advising state and federal congressional offices and governmental agencies on issues relating to collegiate sports.

Ms. Meyer began her legal career in the Bureau of Competition, Federal Trade Commission, in Washington, D.C. She then moved to private practice and joined Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York City. During her more than 40 year legal career at Simpson Thacher, she represented clients on antitrust and Title IX sports issues in numerous federal courts and agencies, including briefing in the U.S. Supreme Court. She also established Simpson Thacher’s Los Angeles office.

Ms. Meyer regularly guest lectures, consults and writes on issues involving college sports, Title IX, amateurism, and other current topics at all levels of sports. She has published in scholarly law reviews, including in the Harvard Journal of Sports and Entertainment, University of Southern California Law Review, Syracuse Law Review, Antitrust Bulletin, and Marquette Sports Law Review. She has written amicus briefs in courts throughout the US.

Ms Meyer is a member of the board of directors of the Sports Lawyers Association where she has held a range of leadership positions, including currently as a member of the Executive Committee. She is a member of the Advisory Councils of the Women’s Sports Network, the Women’s Sports Foundation, the Concussion Legacy Foundation and the Sports Industry Council at the IU Kelley School of Business. Ms. Meyer is an emerita member of the board of directors of the National Women’s Law Center, Women’s Sports Foundation, Reproductive Health Access Project, and Urban Assembly Girls School for Criminal Justice. Ms. Meyer is an active member of numerous antitrust and sports law bar association committees at the city, state and federal levels. She has been named a New York Super Lawyer in the categories of Antitrust and Top Women Lawyers. She received the IU Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 2022, the IU Bicentennial Medal in 2020 and the IU O’Neill Distinguished Alumni Award in 2014. She has been Chair of the IU O’Neill Dean’s Council since 2018. She is licensed to practice in NY and CA.

Ms. Meyer was a top 10 butterfly swimmer in the world in the early 1970s before Title IX opened broad intercollegiate opportunities for women. Currently, she holds all-time top 10 butterfly records in masters swimming in the U.S.

Ms. Meyer received a B.S. from Indiana University, with high distinction, and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.
